US 46 is a major east/west route in the northern section of New Jersey. It begins at I-80 in Knowlton near the New Jersey-Pennsylvania border and runs parallel to I-80 across the state. The western portion is a two-lane undivided road, but it widens further to the east. Near New York City, it is a divided highway and many of its interchanges are grade-separated. In Palisades Park, it merges with US 1/US 9. The three are multiplexed for a short distance to the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95). They then merge with I-95 and all four routes are multiplexed to the George Washington Bridge. US 46 ends halfway across the bridge at the New York-New Jersey border, while I-95/US 1/US 9 continues into New York.

US 46 is notable for being one of the few US routes that has its entire length in a single state.
