I-97 is a north/south route connecting Annapolis to Baltimore. It serves as the most direct route to the Eastern Shore from Baltimore. It begins at the John Hanson Highway (US 50/US 301) in Annapolis and runs northwest for a few miles before turning to the north. It ends at the Baltimore Beltway (I-695) in Glen Burnie. There are ramps from the northern terminus providing access to the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel Thruway (I-895), about two miles further north.

I-97 is the shortest two-digit interstate in the country. It has no direct interchange with any other two-digit interstate, although there is access to I-95 at the northern terminus via I-695 and I-895.
