MD 279 is a short diagonal route extending from Elkton to the state line. Old Philadelphia Road (MD 7) becomes MD 279 upon crossing Pulaski Highway (US 40). The section in Elkton is known as Newark Avenue. Heading out of town, it changes names to become Elkton Road. It has an interchange with the John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway (I-95) at exits 109A-B, the northernmost interchange in the state. Shortly thereafter, Elkton Road crosses into Delaware and continues as DE 279.
