US 220 is a north/south route extending from Rockingham, North Carolina, to South Waverly, Pennsylvania, along the border with New York. The section is Maryland is relatively short, crossing the state's western panhandle between West Virginia and Pennsylvania in the area of Cumberland. It enters Maryland from Pennsylvania on a bridge over the Potomac River. The first section is known as McMullen Highway and runs north to end at the National Freeway (I-68) west of Cumberland. US 220 follows the National Freeway (I-68) through Cumberland and then splits off to the north again. After a couple of miles, it reaches the state line and crosses into Pennsylvania.
