NH 101 is the southernmost east/west route crossing New Hampshire. It begins at Franklin Pierce Highway (NH 9) in Keene. NH 10 and NH 12, which are multiplexed with NH 9 in opposite directions, both follow NH 101 for a short distance before splitting off. NH 101 runs east to Milford, where it is known as Elm Street. It turns off onto a bypass, while Elm Street continues east as NH 101A. The bypass is a super-2, a two-lane undivided highway with grade-separated interchanges. The bypass loops around the town to the south and then curves to the north. Heading away from Milford, the bypass ends, and NH 101 continues northeast to Manchester as a surface road again.
In Manchester, NH 101 joins I-293 and follows it to its southern terminus at I-93. It then follows I-93 north for a couple of exits before splitting off to the east to become an expressway. At first, the expressway has no name, but once it reaches Exeter, it is known as the Exeter-Hampton Expressway. There is an interchange with the Blue Star Turnpike (I-95), and then the Exeter-Hampton Expressway narrows down to become a super-2 again. Coming into Hampton, the expressway splits into a pair of one-way streets. Eastbound traffic follows Highland Avenue, while westbound traffic follows Church Street. NH 101 ends at Ocean Boulevard (NH 1A) near the Atlantic Ocean.
