The Goethals Bridge is one of the two highway bridges across the Arthur Kill, connecting Staten Island and New Jersey. On the New Jersey side, there is a short approach highway called the Union Freeway that provides access to the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) and then ends at US 1/US 9 in Elizabeth. The original plans were for the Union Freeway to extend northwest to end at I-78 in Springfield, but only the portion between US 1/US 9 and the bridge was actually constructed.
