The McCarter Highway is a north/south route along the Passaic River from Newark to Clifton. It begins at US 1/US 9 as a freeway but then descends into the streets of Newark as a boulevard with traffic lights after a few exits. North of Newark, it becomes a freeway again, eventually ending at US 46 in Clifton.
