The McCarter Highway begins at US 1/US 9 in Newark. There is a left exit for US 22 west.

The McCarter Highway descends into the streets of Newark to become a boulevard. There are traffic lights at Miller Street, Emmet Street, Murray Street, South Street, Walnut Street, Green Street, Lafayette Street, and Edison Place. There are elevated railroad tracks for Amtrak, New Jersey Transit, and PATH just to the right of the road.

There is a traffic light at Market Street. Turn left here to go west on CR 510, which begins here, although there is no signage for it.

There is a traffic light at Center Street. Turn left here to go west on CR 508. Eastbound CR 508 is multiplexed with NJ 21 straight ahead.

There is a traffic light at Bridge Street. CR 508 splits off to the right here. Once again, there is no county route signage.

The McCarter Highway passes under I-280. There is an eastbound entrance on the right.

There is a traffic light at Clay Street, which is Spur CR 506 to the left. Since left turns are prohibited here, there is no county route signage.

There is a traffic light at Gouverneur Street. A sign directs motorists wishing to access Spur CR 506 to turn right here and go around the block.

Heading out of Newark, the McCarter Highway becomes a freeway. It is double-decked for a short distance. Exit 5 is for Grafton Avenue and Mill Street.

North of exit 5, the highway is double-decked again. Exit 6 is for NJ 7.
