Southbound Views

US 1/US 9 enters New Jersey from New York on the George Washington Bridge (I-95). The two routes are multiplexed with I-95 for a few exits and then with US 46 for another few exits before splitting off onto Broad Avenue.
NJ 5 begins on the left at the first traffic light. Ray Avenue is also to the left just after it.

Broad Avenue runs south as a four-lane undivided road. There are traffic lights at Pleasant View Terrace, Shaler Boulevard (CR 31), Greeley Avenue, and Probst Avenue.

Welcome to Hudson County! The cross streets here are numbered, beginning with 91st Street and decreasing to the south.

There is a grade-separated interchange with Paterson Plank Road (CR 681), West Side Avenue, and Union Turnpike (CR 676). Immediately thereafter, there is an entrance to the Secaucus Bypass (NJ 3), which begins here.

Skipping a few miles to the south, a long bridge called the Pulaski Skyway carries US 1/US 9 across the Hackensack River and the Passaic River from Jersey City to Newark. There is an exit between the two rivers for South Kearny, but it is closed due to construction.

At the end of the Pulaski Skyway, there is an exit for Raymond Boulevard. Use this as a detour for the closed South Kearny exit.

The highway splits into express and local lanes. Use the express lanes for Newark Airport and points to the south. Use the local lanes for all exits.

South of the NJ 81 split, the freeway ends. US 1/US 9 becomes a six-lane divided road with traffic lights. There are lights at Flora Street, Anna Street, Bond Street, East Grand Street, and East Jersey Street.

There is a traffic circle at South Elmora Avenue (NJ 439) and Bayway (NJ 439). US 1/US 9 continues straight through the middle of the circle, intersecting it at a pair of traffic lights. Exit before the first light for access to NJ 439.
