NJ 138 is an extension of the Central Jersey Expressway (I-195) a few miles to the east. I-195 becomes NJ 138 at its interchange with NJ 34. There is one last freeway interchange with the Garden State Parkway (NJ 444), which is assigned an exit number as if it were part of I-195. East of the parkway, NJ 138 is a four-lane divided highway with traffic lights and jughandles. Because of the lights, it does not meet interstate standards and therefore cannot be designated as part of I-195. The Monmouth Freeway (NJ 18) has its southern terminus at NJ 138. NJ 138 ends at a grade-separated interchange with NJ 35 in Wall.
