NJ 31 is a north/south route in the northwestern area of New Jersey. It begins at US 206 in Trenton as Pennington Avenue, changing names upon leaving the city to become Pennington Road. Once it reaches Pennington, it has no names and is known solely by its number for the rest of its length. It continue north to Ringoes, where it meets US 202 at the northernmost exit of its expressway section. It joins US 202, and the two routes are multiplexed north to Flemington, where they split at a traffic circle at the eastern terminus of NJ 12. NJ 31 continues north through Clinton to end at US 46 in White. In most places, NJ 31 is a two-lane undivided road, although it widens to become a four-lane divided highway in the vicinity of Clinton.
