NJ 4 is an east/west highway extending from Paterson to Fort Lee. For most of its length, it is a Jersey freeway, meaning that there are overpasses at all places that others roadways cross it, but there are also businesses along the highway. A few miles east of the western terminus, NJ 208 begins at NJ 4 and runs northwest as a freeway to I-287 near the border with New York. The section of NJ 4 west of this interchange is a divided highway with traffic lights known as Broadway. The remainder of NJ 4 has no name and is generally referred to as Route 4. At the eastern terminus, it merges into the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) a few exits before the George Washington Bridge.
