The Bayonne Bridge crosses the Kill Van Kull from Staten Island to Bayonne, New Jersey. At the state line, it changes designation from NY 440 to NJ 440.

NJ 440 runs north through Bayonne. The Bayonne Crossing shopping center is on the right along this stretch. There are traffic lights at 5th Street, 21st Street, New Hook Road, Lefante Way, and Goldsborough Drive.

There is an entrance to the Newark Bay Extension of the New Jersey Turnpike (I-78). Turn right at the traffic light before the interchange for Pulaski Street.

Welcome to Jersey City! NJ 440 curves around to the south and then to the north, passing under the Newark Bay Bridge, which is part of the Newark Bay Extension of the New Jersey Turnpike (I-78). There is an exit with no signage that leads to West 63rd Street and Kennedy Boulevard (CR 501).

NJ 440 runs north through Jersey City as a four-lane divided highway. There are traffic lights at Society Hill Road, Danforth Avenue, and Carbon Place.

NJ 440 ends at a traffic light at Truck US 1/US 9. Continue straight ahead to go north or turn left onto Communipaw Avenue to go south. The section of Communipaw Avenue to the right is erroneously marked as CR 612, although it does not actually have a route number.
