The original Tappan Zee Bridge had a center lane that was reversible. These electronic signs directed motorists approaching the bridge to get out of the left lane when center lane on the bridge was carrying traffic in the opposite direction.

Before the introduction of cashless tolling, there was a tollbooth in Spring Valley. Trucks, buses, and trailers without E-ZPass had to bear right for the tollbooth, while other vehicles could continue straight ahead along the Thruway.

Going several years further back, these signs with white backgrounds used to mark the truck-only toll in Spring Valley. They were replaced with new signs that have green backgrounds.

Prior to the introduction of cashless tolling on the Thruway, there was a toll plaza at exit 16. The Thruway split into two sets of lanes. The inner lanes were express lanes for E-ZPass only, while the outer lanes had tollbooths for cash.
