These signs, which were found at the beginning of the Grand Central Parkway, have been replaced. At the time, the section of I-278 between the RFK Bridge, which was then known as the Triboro Bridge, and the beginning of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway was considered to be part of the Grand Central Parkway and assigned exit numbers accordingly. Motorists wishing to follow I-278 westbound had to take exit 4 from the Grand Central Parkway.
