The Lincoln Tunnel is a tunnel under the Hudson River from New Jersey to Manhattan. It is designated NJ 495 of the New Jersey side of the border and NY 495 of the New York side, although there are no NY 495 shields in Manhattan. Although NY 495 is a state route, it is numbered as if it were an interstate because it was originally planned as one. It has the same number as the Long Island Expressway (I-495) because the two highways were supposed to be connected by a Mid-Manhattan Expressway that would have crossed Manhattan, connecting the Lincoln Tunnel to the Midtown Tunnel and providing a continuous I-495 from Secaucus to Riverhead.
