US 1 is a major route running from Key West in Florida to the Canadian border in Maine. Prior to the construction of I-95, it was the main route along the East Coast. The portion in Virginia runs the height of the state from North Carolina to the District of Columbia. It runs northeast from the state line to Petersburg, serving as a local alternative to I-85. After I-85 ends in Petersburg, US 1 runs north, serving as a local alternative to I-95. It passes through Richmond and Fredericksburg before reaching the suburbs of Washington, DC. In Arlington, it merges with the Shirley Highway (I-395) just south of the Potomac River. The two routes are multiplexed across the river to the District of Columbia.

Significant portions of US 1 were originally known as Jefferson Davis Highway, after the president of the Confederacy during the Civil War. This name has been removed in most places to avoid honoring someone who historical significance largely consisted of fighting against the abolition of slavery. These portions are now known solely by their route number or by alternative names such as Richmond Highway, Patriot Highway, and Emancipation Highway.
