I-895 is an alternative to the John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway (I-95) in Baltimore and its southern suburbs. It splits off from I-95 a short distance south of the Baltimore Beltway (I-695). I-95 runs through the downtown area of Baltimore, while I-895 runs further south. Both highways cross the Patapsco River through tunnels. I-95 passes through the Fort McHenry Tunnel, while I-895 passes through the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel. For this reason, it is known as the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel Thruway. Most of the exits are partial interchanges, with entrances in the direction toward the tunnel and exits in the direction away from the tunnel. I-895 continues north through Baltimore on the other side of the river and merges back into I-95 near the city line.
