NJ 42 is a north/south route carrying traffic between Atlantic City and Philadelphia. It begins at the intersection where US 322 turns off of Black Horse Pike onto Sicklerville Road. It runs north along Black Horse Pike, which is this area is a large four-lane divided highway with traffic lights and jughandles, to the western terminus of the Atlantic City Expressway (NJ 446). There, it leaves Black Horse Pike to become the North-South Freeway, a highway that carries traffic to and from the expressway. Black Horse Pike continues north as NJ 168. NJ 42 ends at the I-295 in Bellmawr, where it becomes the approach to the Walt Whitman Bridge (I-76), which crosses the Delaware River to Philadelphia.
