Westbound Views
East 72 Street begins at a dead end near the East River. For the first block, it is a two-lane undivided road. There is a double yellow line down the middle, but it is badly faded away and therefore difficult to see in the pictures. There is a traffic light with an oversized street name sign at York Avenue.

The transverse road that crosses Central Park and connects East 72 Street to West 72 Street is different from the other transverse roads in that it is a westbound one-way street. It is also different in that it has no overpasses. Instead, it merges with the Park Drive and then immediately splits off again. Bear left at the first fork and left at the second fork to stay on the transverse road. On the weekends, this transverse road is closed to automotive traffic and reserved for use by pedestrians, bicycles, and horses.
